About Me
My name is Sandy du Plessis.
I am an Emergency Medical Technician. Although I have now retired from the ambulance service, I am still registered and in good standing with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
I have three adult children who I consider my best friends and two grandchildren who are the love of my life.
As a parent, I would have loved to wrap my children up in cotton wool, pack them safely away in a drawer and only pull them out again when they were all grown up. Unfortunately since that option was not available to me all I could do was educate them to the best of my ability on the various dangers as well as doing my best to make sure that there was as little as possible in my home that could cause them harm.
My children, being more than a little adventurous, often managed to get themselves into unpleasant situations and I had to be constantly on the alert in an effort to try and keep them safe. To make matters worse, as they grew older, my two sons got involved in extreme sports. Unfortunately South Africa provides little in the way of practice areas for this type of thing, so from time to time, I would get a call to attend one of their friends who had sustained an injury (or been hit by a car) whilst practicing in-line down hill racing illegally on a public road.
In addition, as a medic, I attended many emergency calls at private homes where very young children had been hurt in some way, had ingested a poisonous substance, or fallen in to the family pool.
I now use the internet to share my knowledge and experiences with anyone who has a need for the information. Although I am not likely to know it, perhaps the information in these pages will help a family somewhere in the world
